Cada 27 de septiembre se conmemoran dos fechas de gran relevancia para nuestro planeta: el Día Mundial de la Conciencia Ambiental y el Día Internacional del Turismo Sostenible. Ambas efemérides nos invitan a reflexionar sobre cómo interactuamos con nuestro entorno y a reconocer que nuestras acciones tienen un impacto directo en la salud de los ecosistemas y en el bienestar de las comunidades.
Por ello, en este artículo profundizamos en estos temas: qué entendemos por turismo sostenible y cómo se diferencia del turismo masivo; los beneficios que genera para las comunidades y el medio ambiente; los principales retos que enfrenta en México; y las acciones prácticas que cada persona puede tomar para viajar con conciencia.
Profundizar en estos aspectos es fundamental porque nos permite reconocer la responsabilidad compartida entre gobiernos, empresas, comunidades y turistas; comprender cómo nuestras decisiones influyen en la conservación de los recursos naturales; y visualizar al turismo como una herramienta para impulsar justicia social, desarrollo económico local y resiliencia ambiental.
¿Qué es el Turismo Sostenible y por qué es importante?
En la Conferencia Euromediterránea sobre Turismo y Desarrollo Sostenible (1993) se postuló que:
“El Turismo Sostenible atiende las necesidades turísticas, al mismo tiempo que protege y fomenta las oportunidades para el futuro… respeta la integridad cultural, los procesos ecológicos esenciales, la diversidad biológica y los sistemas que sostienen la vida”.
Actualmente se le reconoce como turismo sostenible al ecoturismo, turismo de naturaleza, indígena, regenerativo, rural, comunitario, biocultural, gastronómico, agroturismo, de aventura, de baja escala, entre otros.
Impulso y beneficios del turismo sostenible
Estas prácticas han sido impulsadas principalmente por pueblos indígenas y comunidades locales desde los años 90 y se reconoce como turismo de baja escala. Este representa un esfuerzo por la conservación y preservación de la cultura, lenguas, identidad, disminución de la migración y crecimiento en la economía local. Sin embargo, este tipo de turismo no llega a sobrepasar el 30% de ocupación anual.
Antecedentes del Turismo Sostenible
El concepto de “ecoturismo” fue popularizado por el arquitecto y urbanista mexicano Héctor Ceballos-Lascuráin hacia finales de los años 80. Él lo definió como una forma de turismo que además de proporcionar beneficios económicos, promueve la conservación ambiental, responsabilidad social y una componente educativa para apreciar la naturaleza.
ONU Turismo
La Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT), se fundó en 1975, en Madrid como una agencia ejecutiva del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD); a lo largo del tiempo ha tenido modificaciones en su nombre, hoy en día es conocida como ONU Turismo. Desde su creación, ha establecido lineamientos y acuerdos internacionales que colocan al turismo como una herramienta clave para el desarrollo económico, la cooperación internacional y la sostenibilidad.
Charter de Turismo Sostenible de Lanzarote (1995)
En 1995 se adoptó la ¨Charter for Sustainable Tourism¨ durante la Primera Conferencia Mundial sobre Turismo Sostenible en la isla de Lanzarote, España. Fue uno de los primeros documentos que formalizó el término “turismo sostenible” y marcó un cambio hacia modos más responsables de concebir y desarrollar el turismo.
Guía de Indicadores de Desarrollo Sostenible para Destinos Turísticos
En 2005, ONU Turismo publicó una guía práctica para que destinos y gestores turísticos adopten mejores decisiones mediante indicadores que permitan evaluar el impacto del turismo, planificar con anticipación y evitar degradación de los destinos. Entre estos indicadores se incluyen consumo de electricidad por metro cuadrado de espacio, consumo de agua dulce por huésped por noche y producción de huésped por noche.

La Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, aprobada en 2015 por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, habla de Trabajo Decente y Crecimiento Económico en el objetivo 8.
Específicamente la Meta 8.9 nos dice:
“De aquí a 2030, elaborar y poner en práctica políticas encaminadas a promover un turismo sostenible que cree puestos de trabajo y promueva la cultura y los productos locales”.
Retos del turismo sostenible en México
Aunque se ha presentado un avance significativo, en México aún existen retos del turismo sostenible; entre ellos se encuentran zonas de alta marginación y profundas carencias sociales, lo que limita el traslado de los turistas hacia pueblos indígenas y comunidades locales.
Impulso del turismo de naturaleza
El 25 de abril de 2019, bajo el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) y de la Secretaría de Turismo (SECTUR), se impulsó el turismo de la naturaleza en México como estrategia de conservación e inclusión social.
Efectos del Turismo Masivo
Entre los principales efectos sociales que podemos encontrar destacan:
- La gentrificación.
- El aumento en costos de vivienda.
- Delincuencia.
- En muchos casos, la privatización de recursos, como playas y zonas costeras.
Estos efectos perjudican principalmente a las comunidades locales y, en su mayoría, benefician a personas foráneas y extranjeros.
Impacto económico y laboral del turismo masivo
El Global Report on Adventure Tourism de la Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) y la Organización Mundial de Turismo (OMT) mencionan que, en el modelo de turismo tradicional:
- El 80% del gasto del turista va a empresas internacionales (aerolíneas, hoteles y tours).
- Solo el 5% es destinado a la economía local.
Asimismo, en 2019 se estimó que en México cerca del 57% de los prestadores de servicios turísticos locales no cuentan con contratos ni prestaciones por ley, por lo que los derechos y salarios justos de estos trabajadores no pueden ser garantizados.
Impacto ambiental
Por otro lado, el turismo genera una huella de carbono del 8% de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero sobre el planeta, además de la pérdida de biodiversidad por mal manejo de residuos, contaminación por áreas residuales y sobreexplotación del agua y recursos en áreas de alta ocurrencia turística.
En 2018, cerca del 80% de la Concentración Turística en México se concentraron en cinco destinos:
- Cancún-Riviera Maya en Yucatán y Quintana Roo.
- La Ciudad de México.
- Los Cabos en Baja California Sur.
- Puerto Vallarta-Riviera en Nayarit.
- Mazatlán en Sinaloa.
Beneficios de un Turismo Sostenible
A diferencia del turismo masivo, el turismo sostenible genera impactos positivos en múltiples ámbitos
- Económico: Fortalece la economía local al promover el consumo de productos y servicios comunitarios, diversifica las fuentes de ingreso y fomenta empleos más justos y dignos.
- Sociocultural: Contribuye a la preservación de la identidad, las lenguas y tradiciones, al mismo tiempo que impulsa el orgullo comunitario y la transmisión de conocimientos ancestrales.
- Ambiental: Favorece la conservación de ecosistemas y biodiversidad mediante prácticas responsables de manejo de recursos, reducción de residuos y protección de áreas naturales, lo que asegura la resiliencia de los territorios frente al cambio climático.
En conjunto, se generan cadenas de valor inigualables social y ambientalmente, lo que al paso del tiempo resultaría en un progreso socioeconómico en todo México, al mismo tiempo que se preserva nuestro país.
Turismo con Conciencia: Recomendaciones Prácticas
Muchas personas no son conscientes del impacto ambiental que el turismo desmedido e inconsciente provoca en el planeta, por lo que a continuación se desarrolla una lista de recomendaciones para tener un turismo sostenible:
Antes de salir a tu destino:
- Planificar viajes en temporada baja para reducir la presión sobre destinos y contribuir a ingresos más estables.
